Autumn 2022: News and Projects Updates

VS1 Project Receives Merit Award
Last week we attended the Massachusetts Associated Builders & Contractors Excellence in Construction Awards. We went with our partners at R&R Windows, who received a Merit Award in the Exteriors Category for the glazing scope of the Irving Center at Dartmouth College. That scope includes a 50’-high dual VS1 facade that is proud of the brick facade creating a "glass box" aesthetic.
Rotating blinds within the cavity deploy to control solar gain, and an innovatively designed all-glass VS1 vestibule welcomes students to the building. The mullions are at the exterior of the vestibule, creating a visible ribcage over the glass achieving a flush internal surface. The interior and exterior walls of the dual wall assembly are supported by a single 10” rectangular mullion within the air cavity.
Congratulations to our friends at R&R Windows!
Sustainability in Facade Design Workshop in San Francisco
On November 1, Innovation Glass and our partners at Thiele Glas held a workshop in San Francisco entitled “Deconstructing the Curtain Wall for Modern Architecture: Aesthetics vs. Sustainability,” in which we had an honest conversation to ultimately answer the simple question: how do we build a better curtain wall? The built environment is responsible for almost 40% of global carbon emissions, and we believe that our community must commit to pursuing sustainability and decarbonization in every design decision we make. Immediate action items to make a difference were presented.
If you or anyone at your firm would be interested in this AIA-accredited workshop, please let us know! To our friends in New York City, stay tuned for information coming soon about a Spring 2023 workshop on this topic.
KEY NEW PROJECTS
M1 Bank
Architect: core10 Architecutre
Installer: NGG Ltd
VS1 was selected to wrap all four elevations of the existing M1 Bank building in St. Louis, Missouri. The architect’s design goal for a “glass box” aesthetic was achieved using aluminum VS1 blade mullions and all-glass corners, which are a standard VS1 detail.

430 N Michigan
Architect: Lamar Johnson Collaborative
Installer: Christopher Glass & Aluminum
This exciting new project is a renovation of an existing corner lobby. 25’-high unspliced glass fins span the full height of the lobby and support full-height face glass. At the corner is a hot-bent 5’ by 25’ glass panel with a radius of 6.5’. This project is the result of our valued partnership with Thiele Glas, who produced the fins and face glass.
This curved lobby is meant to compliment the aesthetic of the Chicago Apple Store, which is across the street and features similar curved corner glass.

CoStar Richmond Campus
Architect: Pickard Chilton
Installer: Harmon Inc
This project is our largest unreinforced aluminum curtain wall in the US at 54’, and is made possible by a 19”-deep VS1 aluminum mullion. This impressive clear span is achieved without any steel reinforcement or backing structure and will be a new world record for an unreinforced aluminum curtain wall. Only one splice plate is required for the entire 54’ assembly at mid span offering an incredible display of structural aluminum.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Harwood International
Architect: Kengo Kuma
Installer: Harmon Inc
VS1-g+ was selected for the lobby of this Kengo Kuma-designed building. The glass fins are full height (no splice) and span 30’ at the tallest point. The face glass is held to the glass fins laterally without any hardware achieving an ultimate level of structural transparency. Two all-glass vestibules are integrated into the facade.
O'Hare Terminal 5 Renovation and Expansion
Architect: Muller & Muller and HOK
Installer: Christopher Glass and Aluminum
VS1 selected for 40,000 square feet of new facade; approximately 50% will be electrochromic (smart glass) technology.

American Century Investment
Architect: HOK
Installer: Flynn Midwest/AGP
Installation has begun on this 24' VS1-g+ lobby facade that utilizes full-height unspliced fins. The roof of an all-glass vestibule cantilevers to the exterior to create a canopy.
