29' span with 10° outward slant; "Smart Glass"
Standard VS1 kit of parts with horizontal frame
VS1 was selected for this unique scope at FWA, incorporating a feature wall with a 10-degree outward slant over a 29' span.
The flexibility of the VS1 system requires minimal deviation from standard details to accommodate unique aspects such as this. Many VS1 projects, such as the NY Red Bulls Training Facility and the sky boxes at Nipper Stadium, feature inward or outward tilting facades similar to this application. Furthermore, VS1 can also be used for in-plane slants (laterally within the same reference plane) as seen in the cases of the Central Bank of Ireland and the podium of the St. Regis Chicago Tower. Finally, both concepts can be combined at once for a multi-dimensional slant as shown in the Resorts World Casino and QA Tower.
Similar to the O'Hare Terminal 5 scope, the Fort Wayne project also incorporated electrochromic glass panels for sunlight management. To prevent over-deflection, our project manager collaborated with the glass supplier to develop a horizontal VS1 frame for reinforcement. The project is estimated to be completed in 2025.
