Bird-Safe Glass

The choice of bird-safe glass makeups is the new standard in façade design, as the industry turns its attention not only to the effect of construction on climate change but also the impact on the regional wildlife and ecology. In the United States alone, glass collisions cause one billion bird deaths per year.

Bird-safe glass typically features an external ceramic frit or pattern, which makes the glass surface visible to birds. (Alternative, a post-install decal can be applied to face glass to upgrade the façade.) The frit can also serve to reflect sunlight, and can be designed to complement a façade’s design, like in the case of the Niagara Falls Welcome Center which features glass with a “falling water” frit pattern.
