36' lobby facade
12.75" jumbo VS1 mullion, direct glaze

This new government building in the heart of Raleigh will welcome visitors with a 36’ VS1 lobby facade. That entry wall is achieved with the 12.75” rectangular “jumbo” VS1 mullion, with the glass direct-glazed to the face of the mullion. The VS1 mullions also support vertical glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) shading fins that attached to both the lobby facade and an upper floor VS1 wall scope. The upper wall has a reduced span and therefore utilizes a shallower 8” mullion. The GFRC fins span the full height of the facades and range in depth from 6” to 24”. They attach to the VS1 mullions via T-brackets that bolt to the face of the mullions with the web of the T extending through the vertical glass joint to make the connection. Exterior shading attachments are a standard VS1 detail.

FROM THE ARCHITECT HENNING LARSEN

At the base of the building housing the public oriented functions, the solidity of the tower massing is carved away, resulting in a transparent podium façade referencing the slender oak trees that line the city’s streets and give it the nickname ‘the city of oaks’. The façade blends inside and out, visually connecting the nature of Nash Square into the building.
